Child Custody Lawyers Serving St. Cloud Families With Compassion

Child custody matters represent some of the most emotionally challenging situations families face.

Since 1971, Reichert Wenner, P.A., has guided St. Cloud families through custody disputes with understanding and care. Our child custody attorneys recognize that every family situation is unique and work to develop solutions that protect your relationship with your children.

What Types Of Custody Arrangements Are Available In Minnesota?

Minnesota law recognizes different custody structures that address both decision-making authority and where children reside. Legal custody refers to the right to make major decisions about a child’s education, health care and religious upbringing. Physical custody determines where children live and spend their time.

Parents may share joint legal custody, allowing both to participate in important decisions or one parent may hold sole legal custody. Similarly, joint physical custody arrangements let children divide time between both homes, while sole physical custody places children primarily with one parent. The noncustodial parent typically receives visitation rights, also called parenting time, which can follow various schedules based on family needs and children’s ages.

When Can A Custody Order Be Changed?

An existing custody order can be changed whenever there is a substantial change in circumstances since the original order. Courts will not alter child custody agreements simply because one parent requests it.

Substantial changes might include a parent’s relocation to another city or state, significant changes in a child’s educational or medical needs, or evidence that a parent’s behavior endangers the child’s well-being.
