Seniors, watch out for these spring hazards

On Behalf of | Mar 27, 2019 | Injuries

The warmer temperatures and sunshine that spring brings is sure to get you out of your home more. Being out in the fresh air is good for your physical and mental health. Unfortunately, the outdoors carries a risk of harm.

If you are a senior, you especially want to be aware of these hazards so you can avoid them. If they happen despite your safety efforts, you may be able to pursue compensation for your injuries.

Slips and falls

With all the ice and snow melting away, much of the ground outside is slippery from the water and mud. Places that are more susceptible to having a slick surface include areas where snow is piled high from plowing, where there is no drainage and where the sun does not reach to dry up the moisture. Entrances to stores and buildings can also be hazards, as people track in water and mud. Be careful where you walk to avoid slipping and falling. Use handrails where available and notify managers of wet entryways.

Dogs

Although many owners still walk their dogs in the winter, you will see an increase in cute canines with spring now here. Other people’s dogs can be fun and therapeutic to interact with, but not all dogs are safe, and some may bite you, even in just a playful manner. Many dogs are also hyper and can knock you over when greeting you. According to city ordinances, dogs must be on a leash unless in an off-leash dog park. Watch out for unleashed dogs, as their owners may not be nearby to prevent their pets from hurting you.

Motorcycle accidents

Are you a biker? You are probably thrilled to finally have good weather for a ride. However, know that 36 percent of motorcycle fatalities involve riders who are 50 years old and above, reports the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The risk of injury and death goes up simply due to the consequences of aging. Always wear protective gear, avoid riding at night and follow other safety measures to lower the risk.
