The Difference Between SSI And RSDI Benefits

The Social Security program offers several forms of benefits designed to help the elderly and those with disabilities. While many people assume you must have low income to qualify for these benefits, you may actually qualify based on your or a loved one’s work history. There are two main types of benefits — SSI and RSDI.

  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI): SSI benefits are for adults and children who are disabled and do not have the income or resources to care for themselves. Unlike RSDI benefits, which are dependent on how much you have contributed into the Social Security system, SSI benefits require that you fall under a certain income threshold.
  • Retirement, Survivors, And Disability Insurance (RSDI): This refers to Social Security benefits that fall under three categories — retirement, survivors and disability. These benefits are available to those who have contributed to the Social Security system for a number of years, as well as their spouses, children and any other dependents that may be in need of those benefits.

To qualify for SSI benefits, you do generally need to have low income. However, RSDI benefits are available for anybody who has worked for long enough to have contributed into the Social Security system. Our attorneys can help determine which system you are eligible for and assist in collecting all the necessary paperwork and documentation required for the application process.
